Our solution for the Design to Zero Competition is a geometric singular form that comfortably houses 3 different size families. The design is such that the observer cannot determine the inner activities from the outer façade as it pulls and pushes across each residence incorporating each in a communal aesthetic. Nine sloping roofs are divided into 3 different angles to take full advantage of the sun’s solar penetration with the use of Photovoltaic Solar Shingles; 14 degrees for summer months, 35 degrees for winter months, and 42 degrees for ideal year round conditions. The slopes of the roofs also play a vital role in rainwater collection from gutter-like appliances for irrigation of the landscape. The design will also include operable windows for natural ventilation to account for the western winds. Banded windows are large on north-facing walls to welcome natural lighting. Portions of the south walls will make use of twin face double-skin facades. These curtain walls take advantage of the normally avoided southern solar heating loads in the winter and use them to heat the residences with air retrieved from the double pane systems to reduce the cost of heating in the winter. We will continue designing to zero.
